See what you think?? A short video that demonstrates how students use their understanding of number sense to develop flexibility in their thinking as they solve math problems.

Diagnosing student's difficulties in math at an early age is critical as students develop conceptual understanding of specific mathematics content and how it "fits" into the focal points of the math curriculum. As teachers we must be able to identify specific pre-requisite skills that develop to the grade level expectations. Many students are coming to us with increasingly large gaps in number sense. They lack flexibility in decomposing numbers and an understanding of the base ten system. Professional growth of teachers is a necessity as we prepare students to take their next steps in high school algebra and beyond.

This the approach of one Texas College as it prepares future educators for the challenges ahead.
